I have often referred to him as Sultan of Strings. But it will be a disservice to him to limit him to strings. When he is playing the keys, it feels Piano is his instrument. Same thing when he plays the drums. As much as he is a performing artist, he is a qualified sound engineer and a fantastic producer. His excellent music arrangement can be witnessed through his various albums released. I don’t know if a guru finds the student or the student finds the Guru. In the case of Ramanan and his guru, Pandit Barun Kumar Pal, they found each other. Under the tutelage of Pal Guruji, Ramanan learnt the Hansaveena, a soothing and enchanting instrument. Within five years of training he ascended the stage, something that does not happen very often. Such has been the grasp and application to music by Ramanan. I have not known anyone who is complete with training in all aspects of music as Ramanan is.

Performing at Swaranjali by All India Radio was an honour beyond comparison. Somethings come by with such grace that it takes a bit of time to grasp and respond to.

A major step in my career playing this wonderful festival produced by Sparshita Srivastava ji with the direction of my dearest friend Shri Anurag Upadhyay ji from All India Radio. This is such a concert series that every musicians should get an experience of as the audience is simply comprised of the top level musicians of our country.

A pleasure and absolute blessing to have one of the greatest Ustads of our time, Ustad Akram Khan Sahab filling the atmosphere with his divine sound of the tabla.

It’s always a delight to have @radhikavenkat.raman play the Tanpura for the Hansaveena. Thanks a lot Radu.

Join us at Barzakh for an immersive evening of Hindustani Classical Music featuring the rare and evocative sounds of the Hansaveena.

The performance will be led by Ramanan Venkatraman, a dedicated exponent of this 21-string slide guitar. The evening features a unique “Double Tabla” accompaniment, creating a rich rhythmic tapestry through a dialogue between two of New York’s most accomplished young percussionists, Aditya Phatak and Manav Khurana. Together, they will explore the beauty of
the night stars through deep meditative ragas and intricate rhythmic cycles of the Senia-Maihar tradition.

This is going to be a great night to witness this rare instrument played in the true traditions of Hindustani Classical Music yet experimenting with the present shifts in world music at one of New York’s finest venues for great food and great music, great community and great friends, Barzakh Cafe.

His love for purity and teaching everything that was handed to him exactly the way given by his Guru, the greatest of all Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar, was unmatched and still is. Today when we start sharing our little known knowledge, it automatically flows from us to move to the next most interesting and innovative thing within the framework, all thanks to our Guru and our Great Guru.

Grieving for him publicly has never been the aim as he lives through us and our music. After three years of his passing, this is the first.

This was a man to love, to adore, to revere, to respect, to learn from and to listen to. This video is for everyone close and dear to him.
